Master Bathroom Redo Manufactured Home

oolala...Pretty Purple..

Redoing the master bath in a manufactured home.

While everything in this bathroom worked and was in pretty good condition, the color cracked us up.
Everything else had been painted white in the house, yet this bathroom was left this pinkish purple lavender. 
One thing that did make us go hmmmmm, was that someone had taken the toilet seat..
Really? The toilet seat?

 This little desk like thing was in an alcove with a big mirror, maybe as a makeup vanity???? 

I apparently didn't get a picture of the tub, but it was in good condition. It's an almond color, which looked really lovely with the purplish walls. lol...

The biggest thing we did in here was to rip out the little desk/makeup table to make a closet.. We tried to remove the mirror but it was stuck on there to stay, so it's still hidden away behind the shelves.

I painted the whole thing the straw color I'd used in most of the house.. 
Bye bye purple bathroom.

We put up shelves, then framed in a doorway and added folding doors. 

I found some wooden outhouse looking birdhouses at Michaels, so I painted them to look old and stuck the up in this little alcove.. 

We really didn't have to do a whole lot more to this room.
I put up a pinecone wallpaper border and a wallpaper picture above the toilet. I told John since there isn't a window in this room, I was giving him a view...

I painted the light globes with an amber glass paint. 

I put new old fashioned hardware on the vanity and closet, framed the mirrors using scrap pieces of wood, painting them a flat brown and sanding them to make them look old.. This bathroom has 2 doors in it and we replaced both of them.. I took this picture before the new doorknobs had been installed. 
This room really just took cleaning, painting and a few extras to make it look totally different.. 
I have thought of a lot of new things I could do in here, though.. So another redo may be in it's near future. 

Den Manufactured Home Redo

The Den

Before I married John, I'd never had a den and never thought much about it.. But he had a den in his home, and he loved it.. I soon understood why.. It was just kind of tucked away, felt very private, cozy and was a great place to relax and watch tv or read..

So having a den in this house was great.. It sure was plain to look at, but it did have pretty french doors and a built in desk, which was nice...I decided to try and recreate the den he had loved so much. 

I started by pulling off those little strips between the sheets of drywall.. I suppose they use those because it's faster and easier than mudding the seams, but boy do I dislike those things.. I took down all the crown molding and marked it on the back so I'd know where it went, then after mudding and sanding the seams, I painted 3 walls a really dark hunter green.. On the tallest wall, I added tongue and groove in the opposite direction as I'd used it in the livingroom. 

John has hung on to many things from his childhood that mean a lot to him, so this wall became a place to put some of those things.. 

I hung tongue and groove on the wall leading into the den, which was an odd shape and took some maneuvering. 

I wanted to decorate it in a fishing theme, since that's what John's old den had been.. I looked for wallpaper borders and found a neat one with a hat, fishing basket and fishing box that matched items John had. I ordered it, and when it came, we were shocked that it also included a little calendar for the month of January, 1944.

John's birthday is in January, and he was born in 1944. 

Needless to say, this border will never be replaced by us. 

Not a lot has changed in this room today. We've added a few things, removed a few things, but it pretty much stays the same. This is John's favorite room and where we spend a lot of time together, just me, John and the furry kids.

One of the knobs on the doors came loose and we weren't able to tighten it again. I never really liked them that much to begin with, so I was happy to replace them.. I found these neat looking knobs and back plates at hobby lobby, at 40% off.. 
This summer we will be tearing out the ugly green carpet and replacing it with the same flooring as the rest of the house. Other than that, I doubt we'll ever change anything else in this room..

With just a little elbow grease, imagination and not that much money, a manufactured home can truly be transformed into a cozy, warm, affordable home.

It wasn't much to look at, but it had good bones... 

I have to say, I was a little shocked at people's attitudes towards a manufactured house... When I called to get insurance quotes I had one insurance agent call it a trailer.. I told him no, it's not a trailer, it's a manufactured home.. He snorted and said "same thing"... 

Maybe I'm wrong, but doesnt' a trailer have wheels and can be moved? Our house has no wheels anywhere and is permanently sitting on it's foundation...

Now, I don't think there is anything wrong with a trailer. I've seen some amazing pictures of the inside of people's trailers redone beautifully.... A home is a home, it doesn't matter where or how it's built or how much money you spend on it.. It's the love you put in it and how you live your life there that makes a house a home.. 

But I did feel very offended by this man's attitude.. And quite frankly, I think that was the point of his attitude.. Needless to say, we didn't go with that insurance company. 

It didn't stop with that insurance salesman, though.. We've heard plenty of negative remarks about manufactured homes, but honestly, I don't get it. They are an affordable option and in a case like ours, it's like getting a blank slate and being able to do whatever you want with it, all without breaking the bank...

For us, we're glad we purchased this home in preparation for my husbands retirement, because a little less than 4 years after buying it, my husband lost his job as an automotive supervisor when the economy took a nose dive.. Two months later, he ended up in the hospital with sugar levels over 1000 and suffered a mild heart attack..His doctors told him it was obviously brought on by the stress of loosing his job.. One year later, he suffered another heart attack.. He is now officially retired, doing incredibly well and if it hadn't been for our affordable house payment, we would still be struggling to pay off hospital and doctor bills..
